Jean Valentine won the Yale Younger Poets Award for her first book, Dream Barker, in 1965. Door in the Mountain: New and Collected Poems 1965-2003 was the winner of the 2004 National Book Award for Poetry. The recipient of the 2009 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, Valentine has taught at Sarah Lawrence, New York University, and Columbia.
Jean and I both love reading and writing short and "silent" poems. She inspires me like no one else in life. A part of what I am today and will become tomorrow is largely contributed to her splendid persona and breath-taking poems.

Poetry Class with Gerald Costanzo
The founder of Carnegie Mellon University Press, Gerald Costanzo published seven collections of poems and edited four anthologies. His work has been honored with two Fellowships in Creative Writing from the National Endowment for the Arts as well as by fellowships from the Falk Foundation, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines. His work has also received two Pushcart Prizes.
Costanzo is a caring, "old-school" teacher who likes to see us play with forms and rhymes during his class. His great sense of humor and shy nature gives us a living example of a traditionalist poet, a jewel in our time.

Fiction Class with Nahid Rachlin
Rachlin's publications include a memoir, Persian Girls, four novels, Jumping Over Fire, Foreigner, Married to a Stranger, The Heart's Desire, and a collection of short stories, Veils. Her individual short stories have appeared in more than fifty magazines, including The Virginia Quarterly Review, Prairie Schooner, Redbook, Shenandoah.
Nahid is candid, optimistic, strong-willed and devoted to her career. We have a keen bond due to our common struggles as the writers who strive to outlive our native tongue while establishing our "voices" outside our hometown.

As she rubs her face in between the pillows, she feels the place is just perfect..."

Master Improve Class with Michael Steinberg
Michael has been a writing/composition teacher, a journalist, an occasional playwright, and a director of plays for the last two decades. He coauthored Those Who Do Can: Teachers Writing, Writers Teaching, a source book for writers, and co-edited The Fourth Genre: Contemporary Writers of/on Creative Nonfiction. The latter is now going into a fifth edition and has become a standard text in a number of college creative nonfiction and advanced composition courses.
Still Pitching is Mike's most satisfying memoir, as well as my best learning material. Though his teaching techniques are imperceptible, and his words melancholic, they have taught me to recognize one's own failures and be able to appraise them from staying "put". Mike is simply a writer of experience.
